WELCOME!

Dear Moms and Dads,

Camp Alexandria is a summer camp you create in your home for your own children while they're off on school break. If you feel the dread coming over you of actually running a camp, fear not. It's not what you think. Let me explain.

Four years ago my children (all 3 of them) were just days away from summer vacation and I didn't have a clue as to what to do with them during their time off. In the past they had always gone to various week-long camps for the balance of their 12-week summer vacation. I wanted this particular summer, however, to be different. I had recently begun working out of my home and was available to spend some more time with my children. I thought about how I wanted my children spending their time and how I wanted to spend my time with them. The idea of Camp Alexandria came to me almost immediately.

Camp Alexandria (named after the street we live on) gives children options, expectations and rewards. It also empowers them to organize and structure their time and allows them to anticipate what's next. Camp Alexandria gave me the flexibility to get my daily office work completed before I assumed my role as "Camp Leader" each weekday. As I began to get into this, I realized that the concept allowed me the felxibility to engage with my children around structured activities that were fun, meaningful and from which I could pick and choose. Camp Alexandria also makes the most out of what your home experience with your children can be like. I am a firm believer that the home is the best venue to teach, discover, learn, grow, and have fun with your children.

Camp Alexandria is ideal for children ages 6 through 10, although there are components to the Camp that my children (now ages 11, 12, and 14) still enjoy. You can "run" Camp Alexandria in your home as many or as few hours in the week as you wish. You decide what works best for your family. I let my children choose some of their daily activities but there were also mandatory activities I placed on the calendar for them (making their bed, brushing their teeth, writing a letter once a week to a friend or relative, etc.).

Sincerely,
